More Than Just a Journey - Friendship Through the Access Car Service

When we first met Kath and Kerry together, it was immediately clear that theirs was more than a driver-passenger relationship.  Before we had even fastened our seatbelts, they were chatting, laughing and catching up on each other's lives.  Their warmth and genuine friendship was infectious.

Kerry began volunteering with North Norfolk Community Transport after her Jobcentre Work Coach suggested volunteering as a way to rebuild her confidence whilst she was unable to work full-time.  Looking through our website, she realised that the role perfectly matched her love of driving and meeting people. 

"I love it - I absolutely love it," she says. "It's lovely to be helping people, having a chat and getting out into the community".

For Kerry, volunteering has transformed a period where she found herself spending too much time alone at home after her son left for college.  It has given her purpose, confidence and an outlet for her warm and friendly nature.

Kath, now in her late eighties, lives in an independent living apartment and gave up driving several years ago.  She relies on our Access Car service to attend regular hospital appointments.  Before discovering North Norfolk Community Transport, she depended on taxis, which she found expensive and stressful, particularly as they charged waiting time during appointments.

Kerry was Kath's driver on her very first journey, and the two instantly formed a connection.  Since then, we have tried to match them together whenever possible for Kath's appointments.

Over time, those journeys have become much more than transport.  They have shared stories about their lives, supported each other through difficult times, celebrated happier moments and even discovered a shared love of reading, regularly exchanging books. 

Both women say that their friendship has made a significant difference to their wellbeing.  Regular conversations and companionship have helped reduce feelings of loneliness for them both, while Kath can now attend essential medical appointments knowing she will be travelling with someone she trusts.

This story perfectly demonstrates that the value of community transport extends far beyond simply getting someone from A to B.  Every Access Car journey provides an opportunity for connection and companionship.  For people who may otherwise spend much of their time alone, these relationships really enhance their lives.

Funding for our Access Car service enables us not only to provide reliable, accessible transport for people attending vital medical appointments, but also to create opportunities for friendships, improved mental wellbeing and stronger community connections that continue long after the journey has ended.
